Let’s take everything we’ve been discussing about how the body works, the nature of disease, obstacles to cure, and chronic illness, and look at how we can utilize this information in the most practical way: How can we apply what we’ve explored in our first four blogs to help us understand the proper role of medicine?

As we have observed may times throughout these initial posts, conventional medicine mostly relies on pharmaceutical drugs to treat disease.  We’ve discussed at length the limitations and challenges of this approach. But how did it get this way?

How can disease manifest in a body that is intelligent and capable of self-healing and balance?  Our last post took a look at “obstacles to cure,” the issues that can overpower the body’s natural efforts towards homeostasis.  It's important now to discuss the nature of disease: what it is and what it is not. By drawing some important distinctions, we can help ourselves understand how and why holistic medicine works, and where it is appropriate...

The body is self-healing

In our last post, we discussed the body’s wisdom and self-healing capacity, governed by the laws of homeostasis.  The human organism is very resilient and intelligent; it comes equipped with innumerable balancing and counter-balancing mechanisms to ensure maximum health and vitality at all times. The body is ALWAYS moving in the direction of balance and wellness; that is its very biological nature. From broken bones to viruses and everything in between, it is YOUR BODY that does the healing. (Medicine can either support this process or work against it.) Our last post was all about the profound wisdom of the body.  But it probably left you with one giant, burning question: “If my body is self-healing, why am I [still] sick?"

Modern medicine, in its treatment of chronic disease, seems to have abandoned the most fundamental biological principle of survival: homeostasis. This is the energy that directs the function of all organisms and drives them in the direction of balance and, thus, health. It is because of this fundamental energy that organisms are capable of self-healing.

Understanding homeostasis

Webster defines homeostasis as  “the tendency of a system, especially the physiological system of higher animals, to maintain internal stability, owing to the coordinated response of its parts to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function”.  I would argue that the word “tendency” should be replaced with “obligation”. The truth is the organism can do nothing else. Its singular responsibility is to function at the optimal level of health and vitality; its very survival depends on this...

It would be challenging to try to find anyone these days who doesn’t recognize that we are in a healthcare crisis.  Healthcare-related costs are overwhelming the budgets of many Americans. Yet, for all our spending, our collective level of well-being continues to decline.  We may be living longer, but generally, we are not feeling well! Many doctors, economists, business executives and journalists have written books on the ways we could improve healthcare services and hopefully reduce costs.

You can’t solve a problem with the same thinking that created it
In my decades dedicated to the study of our medical system, I’ve combed through piles of such books, along with countless articles on the subject.  While often full of helpful facts and expert analysis, they all seem to have one common, inherent flaw:
